Altera Corp (ALTR) 2012 Review

Altera Corp.(ALTR) is a global leader in the design and manufacture of high density programmable logic devices (PLD) and associated computer aided engineering logic development tools.

Its products are utilized in the telecommunications, data communications, computers and industrial applications. The company has grown profits at an 8% pace over the last 10 years and its dividend at a 13% rate since its initiation in 2007; in addition, it has earned a 20-25% return on equity. ALTR experienced an earnings decline in 2009 but rebounded sharply in 2010 and should continue to grow as a result of:

(1) ALTR has technological advantage over its principal PLD rival via a newly developed, high performance application specific integrated circuit,

(2) its new generation of products carry higher margins and should add to earnings growth as they become a larger portion of the sales mix,

(3) the rollout of the third generation mobile networks in Asia will add significantly to profit expansion.

Fed Series M2, Money Supply Still Soaring (Chart)

Fed Data, M2, Money Stock, Chart

We wrote several months ago about how it takes 12-18 months for increases in money supply to effect interest rates and commodity prices. We are now in this window.

The dramatic increases in money supply, the Fed balance sheet, and the drop in the dollar are starting to weigh on investor confidence.

Stocks rarely rise when confidence dwindles. It now seems we are moving from what was growing confidence in the markets to growing uncertainty.

The risk of owning equities on a short term basis not outweighs the reward. The threat of rising interest rates has also risen dramatically. This weeks surge in Gold is another barometer of investor confidence.

Investors pull $33 Billion out of Market

Trim Tabs estimates that investors pulled $33 billion out of the market in February. The Investment Company Institute estimates that investors sold $7.1 billion in stocks during the four week period ending February 16. Amazingly, ICI estimated that investors bought $9 billion more than they bought in January. Nothing like buy high, sell low.

Vanguard reported on Monday that call volume was up considerably and their was movement out of stocks and into money funds. Ditto T. Rowe Price.

It appears that both corporate and institutions are selling.

Selling climax coming soon, most likely.
