Why Millions of Americans Wish They Worked for Uncle Sam

  • The number of civilian unemployed was reported as 7,651,000 in the report issued for June, 2005.
  • The same report for June, 2010 reported 14,623,000 as unemployed.
  • About 7,000,000 additional Americans lost their job during this period
  • The number of persons employed by The Government in June, 2005 was 21,763,000.
  •  The June, 2010 report showed that the Government was employing 22,770,000.
  • The number employed by the Government during this period actually rose by a million.

I think that is safe to assume that only a tiny fraction of Government employees lost their job, and net net there are a million more individuals employed by Government

The following graph shows the trend of employment for all Government employees.

Jobless 27 Weeks or Longer Soars to 5.4 Million

15.1 million Americans are now out of work. Or if you look at real unemployment-- 17 million.

One of the scariest statistics is the number of people unemployed 27 weeks or longer -- now 5.4 million. This number soared by 450,000 in the last month.

At 27 weeks, people start losing their unemployment benefits. Then what?

This number is likely to rise by another million plus by the end of the year?

This does not bode well for the economy or the the Christmas retail sales season.

Unemployed for 27 Weeks or Longer Now 4.3 Million and Growing Fast (Graph)

This chart covers the last five years. Currently 4.3 million versus 1.6 in June,2008. Up 40 percent since January, 2009 (1.7 million). 4.3 million is a new all time high and is up 433,000 in the last month.

1948 to the Present. Currently 4.3 million versus the previous high of 2.8 million, June, 1983.

This does not bode well for those expecting a quick turnaround in the economy. If the trend continues it could cause double dip recession.
